An Introduction to Bidding and Buying on eBay

Have you noticed that whenever you open a newspaper, watch the TV or have a conversation, people seem to be talking about eBay? If you've never used it and you've no idea what it's all about, then the chances are that you're starting to feel a little left out. But don't worry! This email contains everything you need to know about the basics of bidding and buying on eBay.

So What is eBay?

eBay is an online auction website - and not just any auction site, but the biggest one in the world. If you know how an auction works, then you already know how roughly eBay works. Someone adds something they want to sell to the site, and then buyers come along and place bids on it. The highest bid wins the item! It's that simple.

eBay being an online auction makes a big difference, though. Buying and selling are not reserved for any elite. eBay accept almost any item, no matter how small, and will then advertise it on their sites all over the world. It's a powerful combination of an auction and a slightly chaotic marketplace.

What is Bidding?

Bidding is when you say how much you will pay for an item in an auction. Bidding on eBay, however, doesn't work in exactly the same way as a normal auction, at least in theory. On eBay, you tell the site what the maximum you are willing to pay for each item is, and then eBay places the bids on your behalf. That means you could say you were willing to pay up to $100 for something and only have to pay $50, if that was the highest maximum bid anyone else placed.

It's not as complicated as it sounds - the best way to get used to it is to give it a try. First, the best thing to do is to go to the eBay website designed for your country. If you don't know the address for it, just go to www.ebay.com and it will tell you there. Now, on the front page you should see a big box marked 'search': just type in anything that you'd like to buy there.

Wasn't that easy? Now you should have a list of items for sale in front of you, along with how much people are currently bidding for them and the time when bidding ends for each item. If you click one of these, you can read the description, and then - if you're happy with the item and happy to pay more than the current highest bidder is - you can bid!

How Do I Bid?

Go ahead and scroll down to the bottom of an item's description page, and type the maximum you are willing to pay (your maximum bid) into the box. Then simply press the 'place bid' button - you will need to sign in once you press the button, or go through a quick registration process if you don't have an eBay username).

If someone else's maximum bid on that item is higher than yours, then eBay will tell you and give you the opportunity to bid again. Otherwise, you're now the new highest bidder! All you need to do now is wait until the end of the auction - if someone else outbids you, then eBay will email you and you can bid again.

All sounds great, doesn't it? But by now you might be wondering whether a site as chaotic as eBay can really be all that safe to buy from. We address that question at our other helpful website: AuctionWinners.info

eBay Selling - What Not to Sell on eBay - 5 Tips

1. Items That Cost Less Than $10

Doesn't everyone like a bargain? What a great idea. But items that sell for less
than $10 on eBay have one big issue: Shipping costs.

It's quite likely that the shipping for the item will cost more than the item
itself and this can be very off-putting to eBay buyers. For example, if the item
costs $4.50 and shipping costs $6, the total cost for the item is $10.50.

If the shopper can acquire the item somewhere else, for $7 or less, then they
immediately have a more appealing offer. The best way to avoid this problem,
for small items and accessories, is by bundling similar items, for example 5
place mats or sets of 8 golf-balls.

2. Products sold by everyone else

Many sellers think that the best way to get started on eBay is to sell items
that everyone else is selling. Surely those super hot items such as ipods, cell
phones, psps and so on will be a quick route to riches? Well, no.

The sellers who are already selling these items are not only more established
on eBay - and thus familiar to and trusted by buyers - but they will be able
to buy wholesale stock in larger bulk and lots than you will, so their prices
will always be better.

Thus it will almost certainly be very difficult for you to make a profit in a
market that is already well supplied.

3. Things you love...but no-one else does

Hobbies can be a good money spinner, but only if they are of interest to lots
of other people.

Another scenario is when you find a product that you think is absolutely wonderful
and could be the next best thing...but no-one seems interested in buying it.
Oh well you think, it's only short term, eventually they'll learn about my item
and start flocking to buy it. Ah, no they won't.

It's a friendless task attempting to inform the masses of the advantages of a
product all on your own. Its almost impossible to start a trend by yourself,
regardless of how remarkable the product might be. To show a profit from a trend,
magazines and newspapers, word of mouth and television are needed to carry out
some of the labor for you.

4. Shipping difficulties - e.g. fragile pottery and plants

Now I'm not saying that these are bad items to sell altogether. Many eBay sellers
do very well from these items. But I don't suggest you sell such difficult items
when you are first starting out.

These items of merchandise both carry an above-average shipping risk, which is
increased with inappropriate packaging. You receiving any negative feedback,
as a newbie on eBay, could be particularly harmful to your career, especially
at this early stage.

5. Items of significant bulk

You think that you can start your eBay career with tanning beds or organs? Unless
you are familiar with the logistics of selling and transporting such products
I would advise you to start with smaller items.

Shipping such large items is a major operation. Not only that, these items will sell less often than mid-priced items as they won't attract the same number of impulse buyers.

Find Your Niche on eBay

You've spent a day or maybe two or three cruising around eBay. You even registered
and bought that iPod skin your niece wants for her birthday. Now it's time to
get down to business; that is, your business. Just exactly what is it that you
are going to sell on eBay?

The right choice of product is one of the most important
decisions you will make when you become an eBay seller. If you are already successfully
selling products in a different environment, it is still important to select
that perfect product from among your wares that is best suited to your eBay audience.

It is true that many people clean out their closets and turn a tidy penny auctioning off their loot on eBay. However, the day is long past when any moldy old pair
of shoes from the back of the closet would be snapped up by an eager eBay buyer.
Even if you did make a killing with last year's snow boots, the detritus from
your storage unit doesn't make for much of a business plan.

There are people, however, who have built eBay businesses selling the contents of other people's closets for them so that is one area at which you might want to look.

When considering your product, think along these lines:

Do you want to sell an item which reflects a personal passion? Hobbies are the
basis for many eBay success stories as are personal interests such as a specific
period in history or a style in fashion.

Do you want to serve as a conduit for other people to sell their products on
eBay? Stores to which individuals consign their items are mushrooming throughout
the country. This sort of eBay store, however, can be both labor and capital
intensive. You will also need to have a solid knowledge base of eBay expertise
or employ someone who has the know how.

Do you want to expand your current bricks and mortar customer base by establishing
an eBay presence? eBay is an excellent way to quickly implement an online strategy.

Do you want to purchase items and resell them on eBay? You can accomplish this
goal by purchasing single pieces that you scout out or by being a drop ship merchant.
Picking up wholesale lots is another way of being a reseller.

Now you are well on your way to discovering your route to eBay success. Once
you have narrowed down possibilities for the kind of eBay merchant you want to
be, it is time to do more online research. It may seem to you that a lot of time
is being spent just looking around and getting a feel for the terrain. You will
find though that tomorrow's eBay success is founded on today's eBay research.
